Play it Safe at the Pool

Safety is important when it comes to summer fun, especially at the pool. Whether you’re at home or at a public pool, here are a few tips for both kids and parents.

1. Never run around a pool. While it seems obvious, running can create falls with potential boo-boos, broken bones or chipped teeth. A trip to the ER is never a good way to end a day at the pool.

2. Put on sunscreen before you get there and then plan to reapply liberally. It prevents burns but also prevents future age spots, sun damage and melanoma by decreasing risks of burn. Keep in mind that sunlight reflects off pool water, making it even more harmful to the face or those parts of the body above the water.

3. If any of the kids cannot swim, make sure they are are supervised at all times near the water, even the kiddy pool. Teach your kids how to swim if you have a pool at home. Kids can learn when they are under 12 months old, so there’s no reason not to learn! 

4. If you open your eyes under water, be sure to rinse them with saline or artificial tears when you are finished, to add soothing relief. Better yet, wear goggles.

5. If your pool is at home, then put a fence around it and never allow children to be near the pool unattended.
